Nominated Proof of Stake (NPoS) is a variant of the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism used by the main Relay Chain and Polkadot-based parachains of the Polkadot blockchain network (independent blockchains or specialized shards). NPoS is used to select validators through Polkadot network nominators rather than the traditional PoS methodology. Nominators typically only choose validator nodes they trust, but if they choose malicious validator nodes through a process known as “slashing,” they risk losing DOT, Polkadot’s native cryptocurrency.
