An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) or token sale is a mechanism enabled by blockchain technology that entails the creation and sale of a token or coin in order to raise funds for a new crypto protocol, a decentralized application (dApp), or other digital asset or blockchain product. An ICO sells coins/tokens that typically claim future utility in the associated project rather than providing buyers with equity or shares. Regardless, ICO-launched coins/tokens may still be considered securities and subject to jurisdictional regulation in some countries.
