A field-programmable gate array (FPGA) miner is a cryptocurrency miner who mines cryptocurrency using an FPGA. It is “field-programmable” in the sense that the customer can customize it after delivery by configuring its gate array (a set of logic gates) and installing or designing custom software. Once configured, FPGA miners are more powerful and efficient than GPU miners—and more flexible than mining algorithm-specific and unchangeable application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) miners. FPGA miners, on the other hand, require more technical knowledge than other mining rig options.
