Equihash is a proof-of-work (PoW) cryptocurrency mining (or hashing) algorithm that is architecturally sound. The framework is intended to be resistant to application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and highly scalable. It is also intended to decentralize the control of large corporations that operate cryptocurrency mining hardware. Prior to its widespread adoption in 2016, the algorithm was developed at the University of Luxembourg by Alex Biryukov, Dmitry Khovratovich, and other cryptographers.
