A bitstream is a stream of data (bits). A bitstream can refer to the data’s transmission or storage. The term “bitstream” refers to the data loaded on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). A bitstream for an FPGA miner sets up the FPGA to mine the coin or algorithm for which it was designed. It is possible to reconfigure the coin or algorithm for which the FPGA miner is optimized by downloading a different bitstream.
